Hamminkeln - Thuinderbike Roadhouse
I was here three times for their BBQ buffet. If you love slow smoked brisket and moink balls (meat ball with a core of cheddar), well this is your spot. Initially I was worried that I would feel out of place in a biker roadhouse which is next to the Harley dealer with the same name. However, food loving folk from all walks of life congregate here for a good meal. I think the BBQ buffet is only hosted in the summer season, but their website lists other food and special events.
Rees - Inselgasthof Nass - Fish on shores of the Rhine
Fish? This far inland? Most will not expect a good seafood restaurant in this region and Nass defies that prejudice. Beware that the dishes are not only delicious but also hefty in size. So skip your breakfast and lunch to prep yourselves. What I enjoyed most and definitely will order a double portion on my next visit are the scallops in dill cream sauce with wild rice and sole fillets with a delicate lobster and shrimp sauce. And last but not least the restaurant is set in an idyllic location on the banks of the Rhine. Not quite the source of the fish they serve but they are near water. Every time I managed to make the trip out to this restaurant, it was packed. So reserving a table is a must.
