The Bungelaer is a hotel and restaurant perched on the shore of the Kraaijenbergse lake. The food and view are best enjoyed on a summer evening when it stays light late into the evening. In the winter, there isn't much to see except your own reflection in the dark windows. The kitchen serves European dishes with a bit of a twist. One example is how they combine the Korean kimchi with the Tunisian harissa chili paste and the European steak tartare. Another is how the oysters are served with an Asian dressing and how Pimientos de Padron are on the starters menu.
A visit to the courthouse and holding cell would not be something you envision for lunch. However in this courthouse, you can enjoy a selection of bites for a great lunch. Instead of the usual lineup of sandwiches, they ask you to select 2 or 3 small bites to combine into a lunch plate. The front room used to be the court room. If there are no seats there, you end up in the what used to be the holding cells.
Kantongerecht: Steenstraat 59
Lovely cozy Italian restaurant run by an Italian couple, Bianca and Roberto, who are keen to share the delights of Italian cuisine and culture. It's a great place to pop in for a plate of pasta or a cup of coffee and fresh homemade cannolis.
Tavolo Quatro: Steenstraat 91 C
I love this cafe for their incredible tuna melt. The photo below speaks for itself. However, if you don't fancy tuna, no worries. They have a great selection of lunch options ranging from omelets on bread, goat cheese and fig sandwich, salads and burgers.

The building itself is quaintly shaped like a boat and it is perched on the shore of the lake in Cuijk. That means great sunset views from inside the restaurant and on their terrace. The establishment is both a restaurant and a fast food joint, so you can decide to go for a proper sit-down meal or just a portion of fries and a burger in the fast food section. Either way, the meals are great!
This is not really a restaurant I go to for a good dinner. They do have some dinner options but I find the menu somewhat limited. What I do go for is to have a drink and a few bites and to sit out on their terrace with the view of the lake. For that, this cafe is an excellent place to chill out. However, when the weather is favorable, the terrace can get rather crowded. Check to see if they are open. A couple of times, we drove there to find it closed or rented out for a private party.
This is a local eatery with a great selection of sandwiches, salads, warm plates and baked goods from their own bakery. They also have an affordable meal choice that changes every week. Eating at this cafe also supports a foundation that provides a safe working and learning environment for persons with learning and/or developmental disabilities. This also means, as a customer, expect to be kind and patient if your order takes time or there is a mix up. I often walk from my house to the center of Cuijk to take a coffee break here. The atmosphere is always friendly and cheerful and the food is great!

To get to the Veerhuis, you have to go off the main road to Gennep and go into the lush greenery that flanks the Maas river. Just when you start to wonder whether there are any signs of civilization out here in the bush, you'll see the white house which used to be on the old ferry landing, presumably before the bridge to Gennep was erected. There on the river shore, tranquility prevails. Any visit on any day, rain or shine feels like the ultimate lazy Sunday afternoon. Their salads and sandwiches are all sumptuous and delicious. My favorites are the Porchetta sandwich with roast port and caramelized onions, the oat apple cakes, and crispy sweet potato fries. Dinners are also great with main courses such as duck breast featured on the ever changing menu.
Het Veerhuis: Veerweg 2
Crazy buffet combination of 9 buffets: grill house offering everything from steak to spare ribs, fish grill with all kinds of fresh sea food, Chinese wok and buffet, Sushi buffet, Salad bar, Soup bar, Bread counter, Italian buffet with fresh pasta and pizzas and a seriously huge sweets corner with cakes, ice cream, fresh fruit, pancakes and waffles made to order and even cotton candy.
You do need to reserve. All you can eat including non-alcoholic beverages is about 26 euros. While it's not high-end dining, this buffet is very suitable for large groups when you have a mix of preferences. There's always something for each and every person
Velp - Den Tol
Forget regular pancakes with melted butter and maple syrup. This restaurant redefines pancakes as fine dining in a beautifully styled setting. Den Tol serves savory and sweet pancakes in candlelit ambiance.
The pancake I was served had a delicious crispy crust and was filled with pork loin chunks in pepper cream sauce. All their specialty pancakes like the one shown here are served with a side salad.
Prices were also reasonable with simple sweet or savory pancakes in the 15 euro range and speciality pancakes in the 20 euro range. They are also located in Beuningen and Plasmolen, both near Nijmegen.
Perfect location to start or end the 8 km hike around the Reindersmeer lake. My friends and I prefer to end our nature hikes at this restaurant. It’s a bit difficult to walk at a brisk pace on a full stomach. Favorites here are the tuna sandwich, the schnitzel special, ice cream in the summer, warm fresh waffles with cherries and savory or sweet pancakes. Prices are reasonable with sandwiches and ice cream in the 6 euro range and warm meals costing about 18 euros. On a sunny day, there’s plenty of tables out on the terrace overlooking the water. This is also a dog-friendly establishment.
The architecture of this establishment is also rather clever. The building straddles the old canal locks thus affording it unobstructed views out over the canal on one side and the lake on the other side. Both ends of the building feature a permanent exhibit on the local wildlife.
